Hoverboard Concept by JarrodHasenjager Hoverboard Concept by JarrodHasenjager
A 3D concept model of a hoverboard, built as a prop for a character I have recently developed which I will upload slightly later this month. The idea for this was to create a means of rapid land transport for the character. My idea was to create a board which looked like a modified snowboard, with a sporty, urban kind of feel to it.

Modelled in Maya, textured in Mudbox and rendered in Mental Ray.

the design is really cool but is inefficent sorry ben i really like your work but it's not right....i mean if you try to turn left you actually go right.......try to build one like this.....went wrong the reason? simple you slide to left using the board and the magnets will pull to the right less distance=more pull

This is really cool If you don't mind me asking how long did this take?

Thanks man, it took a total of 2 days to do, but it wasn't 2 full days as there were 2 other models that I was working on at the time. So in all fairness I would say it was only about a day, which includes the unwrapping and texturing and rendering, but the latter only took about 20min away. :)

Hey bud, I have been working in 3D for exactly 13 months now, but this is a real passion of mine so I put alot of effort into learning as much as I can. So hopefully in time i can improve quite a bit :)

Thats a really nice glow effect you achieved. If you don't mind me asking how did you go about doing that?

Thanks CGWolfgang, the glow was done in post, because this is only a prop for a character, I used the opportunity to refine the glow in post, rather than tinker with it in Maya and save valuable time. Now that I have a good idea as to the 'look' that I like, I can start building the shader come animation time. :)

I'm wondering where the power source is other than that it's good.

Maybe stick some sort of central box between the foot straps for a power cell/balance controller?

Remember the wires. The wires between each hoverpad was what made me think that.

The board has actually been designed to integrate with the characters flight/spacesuit which has a central power unit itself. But that we'll only see once the character has been skinned and ready for posing. But thanks so much for the creative input, always happy to get feedback :)

not to take away from your design of this board, the 4 ''thrusters'' responsible for keeping your character hovering, as a practical note, you would need to have some kind of method of carrying it with them, something like a backpack with a harness that would hold on to the board, or kind of slide in lock you can find on mountain ski's . if it doesn't make sense, or you have already thought of this then don't mind the comment.

it is a good design. a side note, do the thrusters generate heat, if so any ideas for cooling them?

Looks great.

One of the chars in quake 3 arena had a hoverboard.
If you play that char she moves a bit faster than the other chars.
